nvidia-driver 390.87 crashes the kernel on the host where I had this issue, so I think the technical correct answer is "unknown".

This is an intermittent issue, at times minutes apart, but mostly weeks or months. Is the required hard reboot that really makes this awful. If it helps, I can report back in 3 months on the unstable version currently 410.93-2.

I noticed the fan on my laptop was spinning at full speed which
signifies heavy load.  Screens suspended, and they don't unsuspend when
I pressed the keyboard.  I ssh into the machine remotely, and see that
nvidia-modeset is using 100% cpu.  The only thing unusual in syslog is:

2018-08-02T22:49:34.702+00:00 vent kernel: nvidia-modeset: WARNING:
GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x00000000); continuing.

Is this still reproducible with the 390.xx driver now in stretch?
