This looks like a bad interaction between emacs and xfce4, I'd guess then emacs is sending the file name to xfc4 to set the widget title. Could you try to reproduce the bug while passing "-T foo" option to emacs ? This will set the widget title to "foo" instead of "mär19" HTH
