I have a similar problem in Kali. The Kali theme uses this engine and as
such we have "gnome-theme-kali" depending on gtk2-engines-murrine.

When we build a Kali ISO image, we want to respect Recommends and we want
gnome-theme-kali so we will get gtk2-engines-murrine and murrine-themes.
The latter adds 2Mb on the size of the installed system for no gain
(Installed-Size: 2 059 kB). I believe Ubuntu's theme is also based on
murrine and might suffer from the same problem.

I understand it made sense to keep the dependencies a long time ago when
the murrine-themes has been split off but nowadays it no longer makes
any sense. In particular since GTK2 is fading away and
gtk2-engines-murrine is here mainly for the need of themes outside of
murrine-themes that do provide GTK3 and GTK2 implementations.

Can you please reconsider and drop this recommends?

BTW, the package has not been moved from collab-maint into salsa yet.
So I can't just propose a merge request. But I will gladly offer an NMU
if you want.

Cheers,
