have you tried
augmenting the definition of @{HOME}? See /etc/apparmor.d/tunable/home
and /etc/apparmor.d/tunable/home.d/*
in effect running dpkg-reconfigure apparmor as suggested on the file 
/etc/apparmor.d/tunable/home.d/ubuntu seems to solve the problem.
