Could you please provide (the first bytes of) a file exposing this
problem? You can produce it with head --bytes.
Please check with gnomevfs-ls $PWD | grep <yourfilename> what MIME type
is returned.

I think this was done on purpose.

This seems to be a different bug. I suggest you file a bug against
nautilus if you still see this problem in GNOME 2.14 (being uploaded).
