The bug doesn't happen on purging, as far as I can see - the people
affected by this problem seem to be upgrading from an older version.

In any case, multiple people have had this problem, and the case
is likely leftover files. Even if the bug doesn't happen when
installing/uninstalling a modern version, the bug would still be in the
current version *if it fails to clean up files wrongly left over from
a previous package version*, regardless of whether the current version
installs/uninstalls correctly by itself.

Well, evidence shows that it doesn't - it cleans up files installed from
the current version maybe, but it fails to clean up files when upgrading
from older, potentially buggy, versions.

In any case, I only tried to tell you what the cause for this problem is
by analyzing one case, it's up to you to see if you want to do something
about this problem or leave package users in the rain. I don't think I can
add something more to this bug.

Good luck!
