I think it makes more sense to patch the upstream Makefile to use CXX
instead of CC (we already patch it to support CXXFLAGS, etc).  I should
probably try to push that patch upstream, though upstream isn't very
active.

This doesn't seem suitable for unstable during the freeze, but I'll
upload to experimental.  Feel free to NMU to unstable once we're
unfrozen if I don't get to it.
