Thanks for kind words. No alternative means we can't remove pm-utils. You're right that the quirks are obsolete and unmaintained, and should be purged away. There's no hope for machine vendors' ACPI implementations to get into sane states within our lifetime, but handling the brokenness is done in the kernel these days. But, such clean-up is not a task for deepest parts of the freeze. For now, pm-utils works fine, at least within my use cases.
