I have used original Debian package as "debian" directory
source to port newer GHDL version for Debian Buster.

I am not sure if the problem applies to old version,
but solution should work for all versions. I have built older
version but on the system where GHDL has already been installed.
So I expect that the problem may be there as well.

There is complete package with sources from which I have built

  http://pisa-virt.felk.cvut.cz/repos/apt/debian/pool/main/g/ghdl/

The compiled GHDL seems to run our complex tests of
VHDL CTU CAN FD controller project as expected

  https://gitlab.fel.cvut.cz/canbus/ctucanfd_ip_core

There are still some problems after redesign of some parts,
so the rest result is not all PASSED, but there has been
no unexpected failure or SIGSEGV of GHDL.

GHDL includes next patches to optimize WaveDump in addition

  https://github.com/mjerabek/ghdl/tree/grt-optimize-wave-dump

But ghdl_0.36+20190617-1.debian.tar.xz should apply to any version
of GHDL around 0.36 with gnat-8, gcc-8-source, which are default
in Buster.

Best wishes,

Pavel
