Hi Hilmar, I forgot to mention one thing. The version of luaotfload was 2.98 (almost the same as your 2.97). What I saw may be the same as what you told.
I tend to agree with the upstream developer as he also consideres this issue as an open bug at https://github.com/u-fischer/luaotfload/issues/49 Anyway 1.8 GB is much better (for Japanese) than 6GB.
