If you can trigger that crash reliably, you could start gimp
from a terminal with this command:

     script -a ~/gimp_$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M-%S).log -c "gimp"

This will create a file gimp_*.log in your home directory
and contains all output written from gimp to the terminal and
might contain the assert message above and maybe
even some error before.

I'll try to reproduce the crash... but I did many other similar selections->path->paint_along after and no crash happened.
I'm not sure I'll succeed...
