Looks like this functionality has not even been approved for unreleased upstream clang https://reviews.llvm.org/D53072 So I think the problem is that QtCreator authors only chose to make the ClangFormat plugin functional with a custom-patched clang version and it's hardcoded to fail in all other cases. - Adam
