In version 0.7.2-2 I backported a patch adding a privacy policy notice to Variety's first start - hopefully this addresses the transparency part of what data Variety collects in order to function. Unfortunately upstream does not consider a complete offline mode to be a priority, since the bulk of Variety's features would become unusable.
