You're probably looking for Weston which is much smaller. You can try it by installing the weston package, going to a TTY (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F3), log in, and type weston-launch. Then you should be able to open a terminal emulator and start other applications if you want to. When you're done you can close Weston with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and try Ctrl+Alt+F1 through F7 until you get back to GNOME/GDM again.
