Hi Chris, I have emailled the Debian developer list to check if anyone knows if this may cause problems. I would say that for the large majority of people this change won't harm anything and would in fact be a benefit by closing down one series of security bugs. The concern is that it does break something and nobody understands why some program that used to work fine no longer does and they didn't touch it.
