This is still the case in the current firefox package.

This ban is still in place - if you click to use mibbit for a freenode
channel via an irc: links it fails with:

syn     Connections via mibbit are no longer supported on freenode. You may 
wish to consider using http://webchat.freenode.net instead. Further information 
over at http://bit.ly/19JILF
syn     KILL: syn. syn| [0] mmm, [1] (Facility Blocked)

Even ignoring concerns about promoting non-free network services, this
makes mibbit a poor default for handling irc: links.
