This problem appears to be gone with the "recent" Debian testing 'bbdb3'
package switch, so...

... I've now reverted that:

    $ rm -rf /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/compat/bbdb /usr/share/bbdb 
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/bbdb

..., and then installed the 'bbdb'/'bbdb3' packages afresh.
