I can't reproduce this. And I'm using exactly the same workflow to
read my mails inside a screen session on Stretch for at least 1.5
years or so. Actually I'm writing this from the mentioned screen
session which runs since September 2019 with surely hundreds of
successful reconnects since then.

Since you didn't use reportbug to report this bug, I need to ask at
least one question whose answer reportbug would have included
automatically:

* Which init system do you use?

Yes, because that's smells a lot like a systemd issue and not a screen
issue.

I was thinking of this bug in systemd: https://bugs.debian.org/825394

But to my surprise this was actually fixed before Stretch.

So some more questions:

* Any chance that there are systemd-sysv and systemd installed on your
system, but the package is not up to date?

* Any chance that you configured systemd with KillUserProcesses=yes in
  /etc/systemd/logind.conf?

Another clear sign that this is no bug in screen.

Yeah, but completely unrelated to this issue.

But why did you then report the bug against screen then?

Anyway, I doubt that libtinfo5 is the culprit. The only thing this
library does is checking which features your terminal has and which
ANSI escape sequences are needed to access them. It has nothing to do
with process management.
