We discussed this in the ruby team [1] and preferred method is to
patch gitlab to work with ruby 2.5, but we will need some volunteers

 issues with ruby 2.5.

Ok, I see. I'll of course continue to report issues that I notice. Is
there maybe an automatic test suite that can be run against gitlab to
systematically check for such issues? A "git push" seems like a very
basic operation that should be covered by such tests.

We are planning to run functional tests as autopkgtest in gitlab but we need some more gems packaged See the current status https://git.fosscommunity.in/debian-ruby/TaskTracker/-/issues/154

I plan to at least verify the syntax is still valid for ruby 2.5 for every new release.
