I just installed Mint for a test, and the package's defaults are not used.
Instead, the installer writes a config that includes an image.

Yeah, but it would be good to ship with nice defaults, as most people
wouldn't think about configuring a greeter.  I'm not insisting on the
grid -- just anything better than the black screen.

I've learned that the default eyecandy matters a lot for how people
score a system.
