   * What led up to the situation?

After upgrading this version I was unable to open a separate graphics windows, 
even with -display sdl or -display gtk options. I only get a VNC link.
 

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I always used qemu to test built boot images and this is now tedious to have
to connect to a vnc viewer to see a virtual machine.  

   * What was the outcome of this action?

A VNC socket.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

A separate graphics windows.
