I would guess that the maintainers might have face similar problems to
#842683 and that these problems have been fixed upstream in the mean
time, but that is just speculation...

I took a quick look at debian/rules and while I don't think that big
changes are needed -- after all, multiple architectures are already
supported -- I think the maintainer's experience is needed here.

It's definitely helpful to know that you could successfully build and
test the 32-bit version, though!
