I just noticed that you wrote a follow up that I did not see. Apologies
for leaving it unanswered.
  I think my answer would have been to look at the changelog for the
release date of the package version (assuming the maintscript affected
the same package).  That said, I think your solution seems entirely
reasonable and I am more interested in something that work reliably than
any particular implementation.
