During the upgrade, network-manager disconnected, so that I completely
lost the network connection. Fortunately, I was in front of my machine,
but this means that a remote upgrade can make the machine unavailable!

I might be mistaken, but afaics, this has always been the case for WiFi connections (as it is not really possible to carry the state across daemon reexecs). Are you saying this is not the case?
Ethernet connections should not be torn down on a daemon stop.

A remote upgrade over a WiFi connection without a side-band is not something I would encourage.
