Do you enable -O3 build daemon wide? Or via debian/rules?
In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to achieve the following: * Mark two symbols as optional to fix build with -O3 on ppc64el. Thanks for considering the patch.
If I added your patch, I presume I would break building on ppc64el in Debian (which looks ok):
