I have been hit a few times in the past couple of years by having to remove some -dbgsym packages (essentially the big ones: firefox, thunderbird, libreoffice, qt, gtk, etc.) to be able to recover room on my hdd. Only to reinstall them a bit later when I needed them again to debug something (after pestering a bit when the backtrace showed up without symbols), only to remove them again later, etc. So yes, if the dbgsym installed size was 3x larger the concern would have been even bigger.
