Glad you've got that sorted, however this looks like an instance of https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=928916 which was apparently only fixed in 6.4.0~rc1-1. This patch fixed the issue at the time: https://gitlab.com/fetchmail/fetchmail/blob/080d4632298636a9a1b21c3419c059b95fb3cd37/socket.c#L1225 and it added some code to trap the error and print Server shut down connection prematurely during SSL_connect(). gcs@ please see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=928916#43 and #53.
