I am working on a patch that would allow you to recover from broken templates. It would protect you from templates causing parse errors by reverting to the Diogenes default template.
The one case this does not cover is if you go and include broken PHP code inside the Smarty templates, but hey, if you're going to do dirty stuff.. :) Would this satisfy you Matt?
