display font substitution is done by poppler by default, and these should be exactly the defaults that poppler is using. Can you re-check if this is still an issue with the version of xpdf currently in testing, and if yes if you have any interfering fontFile commands, for example in (an old version of) /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc or any other file included from there or ~/.xpdfrc? And if this doesn't lead to a solution, can you provide an example PDF file where you experience this issue, so we can try and reproduce it? Florian
