So bind9 itself doesn't find its own symbols. I'm then not surprised that gdb can't either. Trying a trivial example: int main(void) { *(int*) 0 = 0; } gives € gdb ./test core [...] Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. warning: Unexpected size of section `.reg2/903' in core file. #0 main () at test.c:5 5 *(int*) 0 = 0; So it seems to work at least basically.
