Whatever you decide, please, do not consider *removing* useful package, just due to name controversy. That is not a good path to go down, IMHO.
After all, we still have several "reiserfs" named packages in Debian main, and one should well argue that Hans Reiser actions were much bigger atrocity than RMS-based one. Perhaps check-dfsg-status might be good binary name (akin to check-support-status from debian-security-support package) if you are looking for non-controversial and easier to understand name. Please do contact release team ASAP to check about what renaming possibilities are available, and in what timeframes.
