You can debate whether this issue is a wishlist or important, but IMO there's not been a good explanation of _why_ Debian shouldn't ship with the pc file that the pcre developers, and the other distros, use.

libpcre.pc really just says "-L${libdir} -lpcre", so the unnecessary
dependencies problem of #340904 is a nonissue here.

My program (Pan) configures fine on SuSE, Fedora/RH, Mandriva, etc...
but bug reports like http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338681
are showing up because of this.
