I have it configured that deliberately--until 8756, the X server and/or
nvidia driver would generate a list of all the modes supported by my
monitor automatically.

The highest mode it detects is 1600x1200; this is too high to be
readable on my monitor so I specified 'Modes "1280x960"' so that it
would only generated modes up to and including that resolution.

I just took out the Modes line entirely and restarted X and am now stuck
in 1600x1200. This is definitely a regression from previous versions of
the driver, albeit one that we can do nothing about.
