And this fails because it expects to be in /usr (where it's supposed to
be) and then does that cd which works becazse LO is in
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program.

This is a startup shell script, not a simple binary (which you shouldn't
copy around either), which knows  the LO structure (for various reasons,
LO is a bunch of libs basically and  the "soffice" binary is a small
thing around it. Any stuff in LO has expectations of where its stuff is
which should not be changed  because it then breaks stuff unless there
is appropriate changes/workarounds).

In this case, /usr/local/bin/libreoffice will not work. Maybe when you
do cd ../../lib/libreoffice/program, but I wouldn't be so sure.

If you copied it yourself - why?
