I forwarded your report to the upstream author (via private email) and
they've applied your proposed patch to upstream git (commit
24c0ea7eb84e495d90ce4cec8d4c5532d7dff937).

The "if gio can sniff png" check was removed upstream a few weeks ago by
commit 514f1f4ebac59ef9f81c9fb6aa01638aae9ef30f.
There's a 1.2.0 release planned for the near future, so packaging that
once it is out should address all the issues you reported.
