We could also rename internal functions, variables, and paths to random
strings to force people to stick to the documented API, but we don't and
that is intentional.  It's all about trade off here.  In our mind the
big refactoring that caused you to report #901795 outweigh the downsides
at the time.  Sometimes we've also caused unforeseen breakage and didn't
balance the benefit until it was too late. But actively trying to break
setups relying on undocumented internals for no stated benefits is not
something we do.

So there is only 1) in my mind.  Need to think whether saving these 2kiB
is really worth the trouble.
