The newer PCRE2 library was first released in 2015, and has been in
Debian since stretch. Upstream's documentation for PCRE2 is available

I've reported the issue in upstream and they created a patch for this. The patch is for v1.3.8. Simply applying to the 1.3.7 source does not work out, so so we have to wait for next proftp release.
