I was hit by firefox refusing to change the papersize on an etch system yesterday. I could change the setting in the printer properties window, but the change disappeared as soon as I hit print. Needless to say that I couldn't print on a printer that only accepts A4.
Anyway, I was able to solve this by installing gconf2 on that system. It seems firefox uses gconf to store this information but on a non-gnome system gconf2 isn't neccessarily installed. So I would suggest that firefox depends/recommends/suggests gconf2 to get rid of this problem. Hope this helps.
