To be fair, the PPA is kept fairly up to date, while I have not updated my repo on salsa for years. So for personal use on debian, building from that PPA makes sense. Alternatively, there is also https://dfx.at/subsurface-debian/ which is explicitely targetted at debian. Same issue there, I don't think the author is concerned with making the package suitable for Debian.
