I'll repeat: nothing has changed in the xlockmore package. The functionality you're describing has been in the package for years. (I added it in September 1999.) You may be seeing some side effect of the X transition which is causing whatever version of X you tried this on to ignore the configuration settings. I can't duplicate your problem with the default settings on the current X packages and the current version of xlock. Please try again with the latest X packages (you'll need to restart X to get it to reread the x resources).
