gq 1.0.0 appears to fix this problem. I've made a deb of this, if anyone needs it:
http://leapster.org/linux/debian/gq/ The source package can be downloaded from the gq sourceforge page. (Had to remove all the dpatch patches, as they wouldn't apply).
