Mutt works ok, so does aptitude.

As I was trying to explain, I have a number of terminals that are "weird", but
other terminals are ok. In particular, any terminal spawned from a "weird"
terminal becomes "weird" itself.

So, just launching irssi inside a terminal spawned from a clean terminal
solves my problem. Still I'd like to find out what is really happening.

Do you have older irssi versions archived somewhere? I cleaned out my
apt-cache recently.
