You could try debian-users list. As I was trying to explain, I have a number of terminals that are "weird", but other terminals are ok. In particular, any terminal spawned from a "weird" terminal becomes "weird" itself. So, just launching irssi inside a terminal spawned from a clean terminal solves my problem.
