I am replying to this bug just to note that it now affects the current stable distribution. I upgraded from bullseye to bookworm in the last few days and the Xsane menu entry vanished. It is clearly a long-running issue; it would be nice if a fix for bookworm could be implemented.
In my case it is particularly annoying as xscanimage in bookworm crashes with a segfault. I am off to look for the apropriate package to report this.
