I just migrated from buster to bullseye and it no longer works at all. The
script never complete opening of the DBMs, and uses insanely huge amount of
memory (not only virtual).

The problem is the version of the package you're using, you upgraded to oldstable, which will only receive security fixes.

I'm not sure sending a patched package in the oldstable repository would be a good solution, since it could break other installations that used to work well...

Another solution would be for you to build your own package with the patch proposed by Sergey Poznyakoff [1] at that time.

As mentioned in [2], the patch is in the release since 1.20, so newer version should be fine.
