I granted another 1G to the /var lv and after (re-)removing the two
above mentioned directories postgresql installed fine.

So I leave the remaining issues up to you. As far as I see, one with a
high priority (the problem with the aborted upgrade not being
continued, the first issue in this bug) and one with a lower priority
for informing the admin as early as possible that she has not enough
space in /var. Feel free to clone or to keep as one bug, as
appropriate.
