I guess that the problem comes from the absence of /usr/bin/h5cc, which is in the hdf5-helpers package. This package, which is a dependency of libhdf5-dev, is not installed at the autopkgtest run.
I confess that I am confused and need your advice here. Currently, the xmds2 package depends on libhdf5-mpi-dev. Should hdf5-helpers or libhdf5-dev be added to Depends?
