Currently there is no way for ifupdown to differentiate hex strings from plaintext, therefore we use a slightly different method for handling them. This is described in README.modes.

OK, I changed this (even if it works with wpa-psk, when I reboot the
AP). But it still does not work :(

Then I can only conclude that there is some weird interaction between your radio and access point.

I am out of ideas (for now). Cannot see obvious errors on the wpa_supplicant side.
