Sorry, I had intended to mention that drastically cutting down on spam
messages is a great thing and has my full support :)

But it seems to me that if it gives me the option "Allow only the users on my
buddy list" and it still allows non-buddies to send messages then there's
still a bug there. 

It seems like it should be easy enough for gaim to implement a fall-back that
drops messages from non-buddies itself if the protocol doesn't implement it
(or even if the protocol implements it, just in case).
