To me, that seems like we're at the point where we could patch those out
and drop it.

setuptools-scm 8 is in unstable, it's currently blocked from entering
testing by setuptools-scm-git-archive. But that probably means that
setuptools-scm-git-archive is effectively broken in unstable already.
