So, bug was (mostly) behind the keyboard.

The order is wrong. --lxcpath is not an lxc-start argument [1] but, an option for autopkgtest-virt-lxc so it has to go *before* the container name.

No, it is in debci, because backends/lxc/test-package has this:
debci-autopkgtest --user debci --apt-upgrade "$@" \
